Biography
Rotsi has been working with Groupe d’étude et de recherche sur les primates (GERP) since 2015 and is currently a research & conservation officer within the organisation. Prior to working with GERP, Rotsi assisted in various different research projects within the Manombo region in Madagascar. Rotsi also participated in the 2016 EDGE Tools Course as a local participant.
Rotsia would like the Fellowship to help improve and expand her current project working in the Manombo Reserve. She hopes she will build the necessary capacity to combat environmental issues, improving her knowledge on many different aspects of research, and using the guidance from the EDGE team to effectively conserve the threatened aye-aye.
EDGE Project
Rotsi’s project aims to understand the threats and ecology of two EDGE lemur species: aye-aye and the Southern ruffed lemur in Manombo forest (Special Reserve and Classified forest) in Madagascar.
Her objectives are to:
- Confirm the possible presence of the aye-aye in the Manombo forest by October 2021;
- Describe the habitat electivity of the aye-aye and Southern ruffed lemur by the end of the project period;
- Determine the density of the Southern ruffed lemur in the Manombo forest by the end of the project;
- Identify threats to the two target species in the forest;
- Understand people’s perceptions about the aye-aye, Southern ruffed lemur, and their conservation in communities;
- Increase knowledge of the two target species through local community outreaches.
