Biography

Rado obtained an MSc in Applied Oceanology from the Marine Sciences and Fisheries Institute of Toliara shortly before beginning his EDGE Fellowship.

Since graduating, Rado has gained valuable field experience as a Fishery Monitoring Scientist which was consolidated by the training opportunities offered by the EDGE Fellowship. Rado is ideally placed to integrate EDGE species conservation into local planning as well as to share the skills he has learned as an EDGE Fellow with other Malagasies.

He is now on a path to become a future leader of marine conservation in Madagascar.

EDGE Project

Rado’s EDGE Fellowship aimed to improve the conservation status of the H.indica coral in southwest Madagascar. His project objectives were to:

  • Document the relative abundance of the species across 20 sites representing different conditions within Velondriake locally managed marine area (LMMA);
  • Determine if current no take zones within Velondriake LMMA are sufficiently protecting H.indica colonies;
  • Characterise the environmental preferences of H.indica within Velondriake;
  • Use the species as a flagship to raise local awareness of the importance of corals to sustainable livelihoods;
  • Integrate findings into the Velondriake management plan.
