EDGE Hero Micaela Camino Wins Whitley Award
Excitingly EDGE had two Whitley Award winners in 2022, EDGE Hero Awardee Mica won the prestigious award, alongside fellow EDGE awardee Emmanuel. The award will help her to continue her ground breaking work to conserve the Chacoan peccary, in Argentina as well as empowering local communities to defend their human rights.
EDGE Hero Awardee Emmanuel Amoah Wins Whitley Award
EDGE Hero Awardee Emmanuel has been announced as one of the Whitley Award winners for 2022. The award will help him to continue his vital work to conserve the West African slender-snouted crocodiles, in his home country of Ghana.
2021 – Conservation Leadership Course – Online
The EDGE 2020 Africa cohort took part in an online Leadership Course this year. The staff, having only conducted an online Leadership course a few months before, took to teaching online again in their stride, with the Fellows learning skills that will help them to continue their conservation efforts past the end of their 2-year Fellowship.
Brawin Receives The Third Segré Species Survival Award
Segré EDGE Fellow Brawin Kumar was awarded the second Segré Species Survival Award for his work conserving the Elvira rat. The one year award will allow Brawin to implement the actions outlined in his EDGE species survival blueprint through a £15,000 grant and continuing mentorship from the ZSL EDGE of Existence Team.
2021 – Conservation Leadership Course – Online
Nguyen Thanh Luan received The EDGE Hero Award
EDGE Affiliate Nguyen Thanh Luan from Vietnam, became the latest EDGE Affiliate to become an EDGE Hero Awardee. Luan became an EDGE Fellow in 2018, working to build conservation capacity for the Botsford’s Leaf-litter frog. Luan will receive funding over 2 years to scale up his Fellowship project.
Liliana receives the second Segré Species Survival Award
Segré EDGE Fellow Liliana Saboya Acosta was awarded the second Segré Species Survival Award for her work conserving the Colombian dwarf gecko. The award is for one year and will enable her to implement the actions outlined in her EDGE species survival blueprint through a £30,000 grant and continuing mentorship from the ZSL EDGE of Existence Team.
EDGE Hero Awardee Abdullahi Hussein Ali Wins Whitley Award
EDGE Hero Awardee Ali has been announced as one of the Whitley Award winners for 2020. The award will help him to continue his vital work to conserve the hirola, one of the most endangered antelope species in the world, in his home country of Kenya.
Successful Taylor’s Salamander captive breeding
EDGE Hero Alfredo Hernández Díaz has been the first to successfully breed the Critically Endangered Taylor’s salamander (Ambystoma taylori) in captivity, which in the wild is only found in one lake in Mexico.
2020 Conservation Tools course – South Africa

The 2020 cohort of EDGE fellows take part in a training course in South Africa to aid in their two year conservation projects.
EDGE Affiliate Sandeep Das awarded the EDGE Hero award
EDGE Affiliate Sandeep Das from India, has become our latest EDGE Hero Awardee. Sandeep became an EDGE Fellow in 2017, working to build conservation capacity for the purple frog. Sandeep will receive £30,000 in funding over 2 years to scale up his Fellowship project.
Gharial discovered breeding in South West Nepal for the first time in 37 years
EDGE Fellow Ashish Bashyal recorded over 100 gharial hatchlings in Bardia National Park, Nepal, where gharial have not been recorded breeding since 1982. This discovery was widely reported by international media.
IUCN Phylogenetic Diversity Task Force Established
An IUCN Phylogenetic Diversity Task Force is established to provide leadership and guidance on the inclusion of phylogenetic diversity in conservation strategies.
2019 Conservation Leadership Course

The 2018 cohort of EDGE Fellows attended a two week Conservation Leadership training course at ZSL, on scaling up their projects post-Fellowship.
First population estimate for the Cuban Greater Funnel-eared bat
Jose de la Cruz Mora uses nail polish to mark Cuban greater funnel-eared bats and produce the first population estimate for the species. This discovery was widely reported in international media.
EDGE EDBE Expedition to Guatemala

Capacity Building for Conservation Conference hosted by EDGE
