Micaela Camino becomes an EDGE Hero Awardee
EDGE Affiliate Micaela Camino, from Argentina, has become our newest EDGE Hero Awardee, and is also the first female to receive funding from EDGE post-Fellowship. Mica will receive £30,000 in funding over 2 years to scale up her Fellowship project on the Chacoan peccary, which will include public awareness campaigns, research and work with policymakers to improve legislation for the species conservation.
First Episode of the EDGE of Existence Podcast Released
First produced and hosted by EDGE Storytelling Intern Ignatius Nalletamby, the first episode of the EDGE Podcast interviews EDGE staff Rikki Gumbs, Claudia Gray and Charlie Debenham to give an introduction to the programme.
Emmanuel Amoah Awarded the First Segré Species Survival Award
Segré EDGE Fellow Emmanuel Amoah was awarded the first Segré Species Survival Award for his work to conserve the West African slender-snouted crocodile in Ghana. The award is for one year and will enable him to implement the actions outlined in his EDGE species survival blueprint through a £30,000 grant and continuing mentorship from the ZSL EDGE of Existence Team.
Conservation workshop held in Panama
EDGE Marine Biologist Fran Cabada and EDGE Lat Am Regional Projects Manager Davi Teles provided conservation training to 31 people, as part of a project aimed at inventorying the biodiversity of terrestrial systems on Escudo de Veraguas Island, of which the pygmy sloth project run by EDGE Affiliate Diorene is a key component. Among the attendees were researchers, students and government officials.

Protected area established for Togo slippery frog
Ghana
EDGE Affiliate Caleb Ofori Boateng successfully petitions government to establish an 847-acre protected area to safeguard habitat for his EDGE species, the Togo slippery frog, as well as numerous other threatened species which reside in the area.
2018 Conservation Leadership Course

The 2017 cohort of EDGE Fellows attended a two week Conservation Leadership training course at ZSL, on scaling up their projects post-Fellowship.
New population of granular salamander discovered
Mexico
EDGE Fellow Alejandro Calzada discovers a new population of the Critically Endangered granular salamander in the state of Estado de México and Michoacán. This finding is significant as this is the only known population to reside within a protected area or reserve in Mexico.
EDGE Hero Awardees Announced
Former EDGE Fellows (Affiliates) Abdullahi Hussein Ali (Hirola), Kini Ignacio Roesler (Hooded Grebe) and Jose Alfredo Hernández Díaz (Taylor’s Salamander) became EDGE Heroes!
The EDGE Heroes Award consists of £30,000 of funding over 2 years, enabling Affiliates to scale up their Fellowship project and put into practice the recommendations made in their Survival Blueprint.
Esteban Brenes Mora awarded UNESCO Young Scientist Award
EDGE Affiliate Esteban Brenes Mora is awarded the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Program (MAB) Young Scientist Award for his research on tapir populations and their protection in the Savegre Biosphere Reserve and La Amistad Biosphere Reserve, Costa Rica. Read more here.
