Biography
Muhammad has an MSc in Conservation Biology from the University of Queensland. He has been interested in sharks since participating in an internship programme which focused on shark and ray conservation. He is determined to contribute towards securing the future of shark species in Indonesia and elsewhere.
In his experience in implementing conservation projects he has realised that this type of work with sharks and rays is a complex issue, which requires both ecological and social intervention to succeed. He hopes that through EDGE he can gain interdisciplinary skills to implement future conservation projects.
EDGE Project
Muhammad’s project aims to reduce fishing mortality of pelagic thresher sharks in Aceh Province, Indonesia. His objectives are to:
- Establish comprehensive fisheries landing databases for two important thresher shark by-catch fisheries in Aceh province
- Collect baseline socioeconomic data on the role and value of pelagic thresher shark fisheries for livelihoods and food security in two key fishing communities
- Use research findings to develop a draft fisheries management plan for the fisheries in collaboration with local stakeholders
